Archie Thompson, A Marquee debate

By: Jake | September 12th, 2008

This week we re signed Archie Thompson after circulating rumours of a potential Gold Coast bid, this in its self isnt bad and the deal will see him in Melbourne till the end of the 2010/11 season.
It is good to tie down one of our stars especialy after he looks to have hit some form again but the question does have to be asked does he deserve the marquee role?
I mean i’m sure Archie could survive on a normal wage and sacrifice the marquee for a big name player, look at what Sydney does to deliver big name players to lift the games profile. With a maquee spot free and going by our visa spots being used up we could easily use the marquee role to lure home some of the older Socceroo’s in Europe. Imagine if we had another visa spot left and we had our own Juninho in the middle of the park we could even get Fred back! Or even do what Newcastle has done and try and bring in a talented Asian player, or even better we could buy Carlos Hernandez.
Sure Archie has been great for us especialy as he is the leagues highest ever goal scorer and all fans can conjure up memories of the 5 goal grand final haul and even last round against the Jets where he came of the bench to get an assist, goal and then another assist. So we are very greatful he has re signed but at the cost of a marquee spot is he worth it?
