Derby Day
By: Jake | October 24th, 2008Or so it has been called, Perhaps it dosen’t match up to Derby’s such as the battles of Manchester and Liverpool, Spurs v Arsenal, Inter and Milan, Real and Barca and Roma and Lazio. But Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC is being billed as a derby, it’s not hard to see why, Melbourne and Sydney, not just in sport, have been rivals since, well forever. The two biggest cities in Australia and two of the most succesfull clubs in the A Leagues very short history and also the two teams to beat this season. Yes folks which ever way you look at it this match is going to be an absolute cracker. Here’s hoping for some goals finaly though as the last two league meeting’s between the sides were nil all draws. Melbourne are without the influential Archie Thompson through suspension, Nick Ward is a worry with a virus and defenders Roddy Vargas and Kevin Muscat had doubts during the week. Sydney are very understrengthed with Ian Fyfe suspended, Popovic and Brosque both out with hamstring problems and Simon Colossimo out with a groin injury. On paper it looks like we have the stronger squad but as the commentators in FIFA 09 will gladly tell you, “but games are hardly ever won on paper are they?”. Sydney still have the likes of Corrica and Musialik in the midfield and Santalab and Aloisi up front with finding of the season Shannon Cole a serious threat from set pieces and crosses. I am predicting a narrow Melboune win and the immpossible becoming possible, yes I’m speaking of an Aloisi goal! Well maybe I was in fantasy land briefly with that last call but I better be off because i am literaly about to walk out the door to go to the match
