Melbourne Continue Dominance Over Adelaide

By: Marcus | September 21st, 2009

What a difference a week makes. Last week our football rivaled that of a pub teams, this week we played the best football we have played all season as we dominated Adelaide to record out 7th straight win against the Reds :D .

Goals: Ward (7 mins); Brebner (90 mins)
Crowd: 15,038, at Hindmarsh Stadium

A near capacity Hindmarsh Stadium saw Melbourne and Adelaide renew our fierce rivalry, with Melbourne coming out on top once again. Nicky Ward burst down the wing with a ball supplied by Adrian Leijer, and attempted to put in a cross, which some how made its way to the back of the net to delight the traveling Melbourne fans and disbelief of Eugine Galekovic on 7 minutes. Adelaide were stunned, they dominated possession but couldn’t create anything that resembled a shot on goal, and a new look defence marshaled by our returning skipper had no problems with the pressure.

After the break United came out all guns blazing but still couldn’t get anything on target. Free kick after free kick was drilled into the Victory wall, Melbourne’s defence held strong, not giving the Red’s a sniff. Just before the 70th minute Brebner came on for goal scoring Ward, I for one was hoping that we’d at least hold out for a draw.

With Adelaide pushing for an equalizer Melbourne broke and won a corner deep in our attacking half late on in the match. The United defence inability to clear the ball proved the last nail in the coffin as Archie stole the ball and stormed into the box, nailing his shot straight into Eugine who couldn’t hold it, the ball eventually fell to who else but Brebner’s feet who made no mistakes in burring the _______ [Insert common South Australian sexual joke here].

Not bad at all.

A Really solid performance by the boys. Defensively sound with the back 3, what a difference Muscat makes to the teams mentality. The team looks so much better with him in it. Leijer and Vargas put in another solid shift. Sukha and Kemp enjoyed there freedom playing as wing backs, flowing forward and not having to be so focused on the back. Moss kept a clean sheet, gathering the ball in the most anxious of moments and some good saves.
Ward and Pondeljak played well in there new roles, as attacking wing men supporting lone striker Thompson, who also reveled in his new challenge, tormenting a hapless Red’s defence.
Broxham and Hernandez also were good.
When Brebner came on I was shitting myself, still can’t believe he scored. (Note to self: every time you insult a player on the blog they play great the next match…)

So Merrick, please don’t change anything, its working really well. We can give Gold Coast a real shake, especially without Smeltz.
Lets see which Melbourne shows up next week!
