Six Points In Four Days
By: Marcus | January 29th, 2010The Melbourne side that was fielded on Tuesday had a few fresh faces in the line-up giving some key players a rest. The goal however was the same and was accomplished with the boys ripping apart Wellington.

Melbourne Victory: 4 (Brown 16og, Thompson 50, Hernandez 66, Kemp 87)
Wellington Phoenix: 0
Crowd: 18,819 at Etihad Stadium
Melbourne hit the lead 16 minutes in when Archie was brought down just outside the box and a free kick was given. Hernandez stood up to the free kick as always and whipped a shot in, which took a wicked deflection off Tim Brown and beat the keeper. Both teams had some good chances to score but failed to make the other pay.
The Victory ran away with the game in the second half. Four minutes in Angulo’s superb through ball sent Archie one on one with Reddy, Archie made no mistake scoring in his hundredth match for the club. Fifteen minutes later the game was wrapt up as a classy through ball from Robbie Kruse hit its target Hernandez (who is a pretty big target at that). Carlos got control of with ball with his first touch then scored his tenth goal of the season with his second.
Matt Kemp sealed the rout in the 86th minute, playing a nice one two with Nicky Ward and slotting past Reddy on his return from injury.
A few interesting things to note coming out of the game:
Archie struggled to shrug off the knock to his foot that he got in the opening stages and will not play against GCU.
Marvin Angulo CANNOT play in any defensive position. In the first half he was given defensive duties and dealt with them horribly, the only times he won the ball it ended up being and advantage to Wellington.
Marvin Angulo CAN play in midfield brilliantly. In the second half he was deployed in midfield and ripped the Phoenix apart. It allows him to use his creativity and vision which is a threat to any team at any time. He pushed himself too hard and will disappointed not to have scored as he butchered a few opportunities.
Robbie Kruse is not a reliable souce of goals. He can set them up but cannot score them, he has only found the back of the net in 2 out of 10 games.
The team looks like they have what it takes to continue to push Sydney and GCU all the way.
